To Pusha-T’s probable chagrin, Drake‘s new album Scorpion has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The project becomes the “Nice For What” rapper’s seventh platinum full-length.
Incredibly, Scorpion achieved this status on its release date (July 29), meaning Drizzy moved over one million units in under 24 hours. The RIAA calculates one album unit as one album sale, 10 album tracks sold or 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video streams of album tracks.
Drake’s project has dominated streaming services since it dropped, so the platinum plaque is no surprise. The project broke the single-day record for most streams on any platform, as well as the single-week record for most streams in the U.S., according to Billboard. The boy shattered the latter record in just three days. This week he also became the RIAA’s most successful digital singles artist ever, following spiked attention on his back catalogue that lifted 55 old songs to platinum or new multi-platinum status.
These numbers were boosted in part by Spotify featuring Drake’s image in all of its editorial playlists over the weekend, including playlists that didn’t include the rapper’s music. The move was an unprecedented promotional effort by the company, and it left some people upset. Several subscribers have shared stories online about demanding and receiving refunds for what they view as spam infiltrating their allegedly ad-free accounts.
Of course, Scorpion dropped near the tail end of Drake’s involvement in hip-hop’s most explosive beef in years, and lead with a chart-topping single, so credit where credit’s due. You can view the album’s RIAA certification below.
