Nas Compares Kanye West's Musical Genius to Quincy Jones – XXL

However you feel about Nas‘ new album, Nasir, the rapper is proud of the Kanye West-produced project. In a tweet on Wednesday (June 20), the Queensbridge representer compared his work with Yeezy to the production peak of Quincy Jones.

“Working with Kanye is working with a young Quincy Jones. A musical genius,” Nas wrote.

Jones, the mastermind behind Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, turned 85 in March, so “young Quincy” could refer to several portions of his career, but it’s safe to say Nas’ point is that Kanye is an all-time producer in the making.

The “Life’s a Bitch” rapper speaks from experience. Nas first worked with a 21-year-old West in 1998 on The Lost Tapes‘ “Poppa Was a Playa.” Kanye also contributed beats on Nas’ Hip Hop Is Dead, and featured the rapper on Late Registration, although the tandem’s latest seven-track release from Wyoming is their first extended collaboration.

Kanye also sounded hyped about his work with Nas in the weeks leading up to their album’s release. “I feel like im 18 year old again when I make beats for Nas,” he wrote on Twitter in April.

For what’s it worth, West has won 21 Grammy Awards on 68 nominations to Jones’ 27 wins on an all-time high 79 nominations. Jones also picked up two Academy Award nominations in the 1960s for his production and score work.
