Dr. Dre May Have a Movie About Marvin Gaye in the Works – XXL

Dr. Dre‘s next feature film may be getting the Motown treatment, after it was revealed that the super-producer is in talks to create a film about Marvin Gaye.

According to Variety, Dre is in the early stages of a film deal on the music legend. You may recall that Dre already has his hand in the movie industry, after he produced and served as the muse for the successful film Straight Outta Compton. The rap vet is reportedly the first person to have been granted the permission to use Gaye’s likeness and music for a feature film by the family estate.

The likes of F. Gary Gray, Jesse L. Martin and even Lenny Kravitz all have previously attempted to bring Gaye’s story to the big screen, but until now, none had been authorized to take on the task by Gaye’s family. Interestingly enough, Jamie Foxx did receive rights for a mini-series back in 2016, however nothing has materialized since the project was announced.

The soul singer behind hits such as “What’s Going On” and “Sexual Healing” has served as the template for much of hip-hop’s sound throughout the years. A rolodex of classics including the Dr. Dre-produced “The Formula” to Gangstarr’s “Take A Rest” and Kanye West’s “Spaceship” have sampled Gaye at one point or another. So, it’s only right that a rap legend such as Dre take the reins of bringing the Motown artist’s biopic to life.

While the deal has not closed yet, or been confirmed by Dr. Dre, the film is reportedly in development. Stay tuned for more details.
