Jay-Z Wins 2018 Peabody Award for Kalief Browder Documentary – XXL

Kendrick Lamar isn’t the only rapper earning awards from non-music award shows. On Tuesday (April 16), the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors revealed the nine winners in the Documentary category, which includes Jay-Z for the film Time: The Kalief Browder Story.

Described as a “powerful miniseries illuminating the greatest flaws of our criminal justice system,” Time: The Kalief Browder Story faced off against 60 other nominees, which were chosen from nearly 1,200 entries. The award is the first Peabody for Jay-Z but not the first for the Carter-Knowles family. In 2017, Beyonce’s Lemonade won a Peabody in the entertainment category.

While Jay-Z has yet to comment on his latest award, at the time of the movie’s premiere, the rapper praised the late Kalief Browder as a modern day prophet. “Our prophets come in many different shapes, forms, or mediums,” Jay said. “This young man just by the fact that he brought all of us here today lets you know how powerful of a soul he was.”

In related Jay-Z news, the Brooklyn rapper recently earned a 2018 Billboard Music Awards nomination for Top Rap Tour. The 4:44 artist will compete against Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole for the award.

Hov also surprised fans over the weekend when he appeared on stage during Beyonce’s Coachella set. The “Formation” singer brought out her husband for a quick performance of their hit collaboration “Deja Vu.” The two are currently gearing up for their On the Run II Tour, which kicks off in June.
