Dave East Joins Cast of Upcoming Wu-Tang TV Series – XXL

Dave East can add actor to his résumé. The Harlem rapper has signed on to star in Hulu’s new television series, Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

The 10-episode drama will be set in the 1990s and based on the rise of the Wu-Tang Clan, who became one of the most influential rap groups in hip-hop history. Wu-Tang members RZA and Method Man are among the executive producers of the TV project.

According to Deadline, which published a story Tuesday (March 5), East will play a character named Shotgun, a tall guy with impressive lyrical skills who spends his days working as an assistant manager at the concession stand next to the Statue of Liberty. East’s character bears some resemblance to Method Man who used to work at a concession stand in Staten Island, N.Y., before joining the Wu-Tang Clan.

Also in the cast are Julian Elijah Martinez, Ashton Sanders and Vinnie Pastore of Sopranos fame. Sanders will play Bobby Diggs (aka the RZA) who is determined to bring a dozen young black men together to form a rap group.

Martinez will portray Divine, Bobby’s older brother, who keeps the crew in line and often argues with Bobby. When Divine gets locked up, he tries to keep the operation going from behind bars. In real life, RZA has an older brother named Mitchell “Divine” Diggs who managed the Wu-Tang Clan during their formative years.

Joining RZA and Method Man are Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo, who will serve as executive producers for the series along with screenwriter Alex Tse. Tse will pen the scripts for the show. Fellow Wu-Tang Clan members GZA, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killa, as well as the Estate of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, are on board as consulting producers. James Seidman will oversee the project for Imagine.
